Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had devoted himself to study and observance of the law of the Lord and to teaching it’s decree and laws in Israel (NIV)

In every kingdom there is an order that is usually followed and the violation if that order and patterns in which things are done leads to different results rather than the required ones. In most African communities they had an order in which they conducted their activities and events such as dowry payment, weddings, burials among others. Among the Kikuyu community for instance if you receive dowry and you hadn’t paid yours, you are not supposed to use it until you first pay your dowry. Failure to observance of this order can lead to mysterious diseases that machines and doctors aren’t able to detect and treat.

In the same way in the kingdom of God there are patterns and order that is supposed to be followed for effectiveness. Ezra was one of the persons in the Bible who set a clear order for the study of the word of God for it’s effectiveness. He did not take the word of God casually but took it with the weight it deserves and that is why he followed a pattern. He first committed himself to the study of the word of God, and then observance and practice or application of the word of God and thereafter to teaching.

The very basic thing in the life of a believer in relation to the word of God is studying it. This study of the word of God helps one to know what the will of God is and what is it that he loves and hates. It is through the study of the word of God that we get to know God which is one of the important thing in a believer. God has spoken through his word and whatever he has said is true since he is not a man to lie (Numbers 23:19). People have gone to prophets to seek the will of God but the will of God is found in his word. Whatever God spoke through his prophets and the writers of the Bible was meant to people living during that time, to the current generation and also to the generations to come. Knowledge of something is very important and the best way is to get the information from the source. God is the source and has spoken through the holy scriptures so the word of God is not rumors. Therefore the study of the irreplaceable word of God is important. In as much you can read devotionals and Christian books, you should seek to study the word of God first and have the truth established in you. Through the study you create a conducive environment in you for the word of God to dwell in. This happens by reading the word of God prayerfully and with mind open to correction, training, rebuke and teaching. When you study the word of God it should get in your heart and this brings the importance of memorizing scriptures and meditating on them.

The study of the word of God equips us with knowledge that becomes power when put into practice. Romans 6:2 the Bible encourages us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The word of God when studied and applied brings the transformation of the mind that greatly influences the character of a person. It is through practicing the word of God that we show our love for God. The studied and memorized scriptures should now be applied in a believer life. It is through this transformation that occurs and the practice of the scriptures that help in differentiating between a Christian and a non-believer. Knowing a lot of verses is important but it’s importance is turned to absolute waste if not applied. Any Christian who studies the word of God but does not slice according to it is like a rebellious person since through study the person gets the truth but rebels against God. You should note that we are called to live the gospel.

And the final stage is teaching the word learnt through study and practice. We should know that in teaching it means that there is a teacher who is you a belier and a student who the non-believer. Our lives are the teaching instrument that we have been given by God. Also our positions are also a teaching instrument that we have been given by God. People should look at you and learn what it means to love God, what it means to be obedient. This is only possible once you have studied the word of God and are practicing it.

Many people want to teach the word of God that is through ways such as composing songs, serving in the church e.g in praise and worship team, ushering amongst others but they don’t want to study the word of God. As a result deception get's in and since they don’t know the truth the devil takes advantage of their ignorance. This has caused a lot of people in the church to serve the devil but still calling themselves servants of God. You can never teach what you have not learnt. And you cannot teach people to obey what you have not obeyed

Remember that violation patterns leads to change in results and this change is mostly worse and undesirable. As a believer make a point of studying the word of God and living it; the word of God says love your neighbor? Do it. The word of God says flee from sexual immorality? Do it. The word of God says do not be conformed to the patterns of this world? Obey it. God has exalted his word above all his name. The word has power to transform when learnt, meditated on and practiced. Our lives are a strong evangelism tool. Remember violation of patterns leads to change in results and the impact can be worse. STUDY, PRACTICE and TEACH the word of God.
